National Drilling Company (NDC) was the first venture among ADNOC Group of Companies. NDC was established in May 1972 under the resolution of the Abu Dhabi Council of Ministers to embark on drilling oil wells in the Emirate. The Company began drilling for ADCO with land rig ND-01. In order to cope with the increasing demand for oil throughout the world, NDC has strengthened its capabilities by acquiring new technologies and adding more rigs to its fleet. Today, NDC owns a fleet of 10 offshore rigs, 16 onshore rigs and five water well rigs, all equipped with ultramodern technologies. The company plans to increase its number of rigs, and to enhance its existing fleet by following a major enhancement programme termed “RIAP” – Rig Integrity Assurance Programme.

In order to protect ground water resources in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, the NDC has entered into partnership with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to develop a ground water research program, thus providing valuable studies and research on ground water resources in the emirate.

In order to protect ground water resources in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, the NDC has entered into partnership with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to develop a ground water research program, thus providing valuable studies and research on ground water resources in the emirate.

Since the program was launched in 1988, its scientists were able to develop a comprehensive database of ground water resources, evaluating such reserves and drawing maps of their locations in the emirate. More than 200 scientific papers were prepared on the subject. With a fleet of three water well drillers, the NDC managed to drill more than 250 wells for water research.

During the past year, NDC has added new businesses to its services: the Multi-Purpose Service Vessel – Al Ghwaifat, Wire Line Services, Directional and Horizontal Drilling and Logging
Services.

Following the directives of H.E. Yousef Omair Bin Yousef, General Secretary of the Supreme Petroleum Council and ADNOC CEO, and with due support from the NDC Board members and senior management, the Company had inaugurated, in 2002, the Applied Drilling Practice School. The School has achieved remarkable success. Four classes have completed the School’s advanced program “Developing Skills of Drilling Technologies,” which is a professional development program that incorporates the industry’s basic requirements, with applied vocational training to prepare graduates for vital roles in oil fields, and to occupy the post of assistant driller. The School also offers two other programs; Technical Assistant and Material Supervisor, with 52 weeks of study, through which students are trained on materials management, administrative roles and radio communications up to the level required in the oil industry. Large numbers of local youths have graduated from this school. About 120 trainees have successfully completed their training and assumed leading posts in the Company’s onshore and offshore sites. The Company has also provided scholarships for a number of students who were sent to obtain higher academic degrees in the field of drilling.

Today NDC is one of the largest drilling contractors in the region and undoubtedly the leader in the UAE drilling industry. Internationally recognised for its safety standards, special emphasis on environment conservation in both offshore and onshore locations.

NDC is also the winner of ADNOC HSE Awards 2003– First Prize in Safety Category and ADNOC HSE Awards 2002 – First Prize in Innovation Category , ADNOC HSE Awards 2006, also got the ISO 14001:2004. Moreover, two of the Company' onshore drillers (ND-01 and ND-17) have completed ten years of drilling without LTI, which is a record achievement in the oil drilling industry.

NDC is in a strong position to move forward and is ready to face any future challenges.

History of NDC

1972 National Drilling Company was established under a resolution of the Abu Dhabi Council of Ministers.
1973 1974 NDC took delivery of its first onshore rigs ND-01 and ND-02.
1975 NDC acquired its first offshore rig, and named it ND-03 Al- Ittihad.
1976–1979 NDC further increased its fleet capacity by two offshore rigs, ND-04 Al-Ghallan and ND-05 Al- Yasat
1980–1985 Offshore supply base at Sadiyat Island, a workshop and a warehouse at Buhasa were established. NDC acquired three offshore rigs (ND-06 Diyana, ND-07 Junana, and ND-12 Yemilah) three onshore rigs (ND-08, ND-09, and ND-11), and five water-well rigs (ND-81, ND-82, ND-83, ND-84, and ND-85) 1988 The Ground Water Research Project was commenced in Al Ain in association with the United States Geological Survey.
1989–1993 NDC increased its drilling power to 10 offshore and 10 onshore rigs by acquiring. Rig ND-14 Al Mariyah, ND-18 Beynouna, ND-19 Brakah and ND-20 Delma joined the offshore fleet, and rigs ND-16, ND-17, ND-21 and ND-22.
1994 NDC commissioned the construction of a 19-storey Head Office building.
1995 Acquisition of one new onshore rig ND-23 and one water-well rig ND-85.
1998 NDC acquired two onshore rigs, ND-24 and ND-25. A total of 13 onshore, 10 offshore and six water-well rigs are in operation. The new Head Office building, located on Al Salam Street, was inaugurated.
